Introduction to the KTB Kids approach

The child focussed ethos of KTB Kids believes that an aesthetically lovely place communicates a respect for childhood and for education. Great emphasis is placed on the caring, family environment within the nursery and feedback from parents supports this. The physical space is designed to be as homelike as possible, with the scale of the space not overwhelming the children. The design of the nursery ensures that the building meets the needs of all the children attending. The nursery has up to 40 children per session and there are three main areas, the development zone, the baby room and the classroom. In addition to these spaces there is also have a separate nursery kitchen with 5-star food hygiene rating, nursery washroom and sleep room with full size cots and cot beds. The development zone area is the largest area of the nursery. It is the area where the children between 2 and 3 years old spend most of their day. Unique to KTB Kids however, at different times of the day these children enjoy playing with the preschoolers and interacting with the babies and toddlers within this space.

Childrens choice is embedded throughout the nursery through nursery design, routines and practices. The furniture is non-prescriptive so that it can be set up to meet the changing interests, and to fit the nursery themes and topics. Toys are predominanlty made of natural materials and are deliberately crafted to be relatively unrefined to allow mazimum scope for imaginative use as props in childrens play. Resources include wooden unit blocks, large hollow blocks, logs, play silks, shells and pinecones. Skilled, creative nursery practitioners enhance open ended play by consistently using open ended questioning to children to encourage and develop their imaginative thinking.

Communication is exceptionally well supported throughout all areas of the nursery with a particular emphasis on the enjoyment of books and stories. Practitioners are always ready to read aloud from a book, encourage open ended storytelling or to support storytelling and language through a puppet show, song or role play. At KTB Kids interactive stories are incorporated into circle time every day. The nursery ‘story sacks’ enable all children to get involved in the story and no matter what their age the imaginative nursery practitioners bring the books to life with their creative storytelling. At KTB Kids storytelling time encourages the children to listen attentively, anticipate events and respond to what they hear with comments, questions or actions.

Throughout the day the children will choose between a range of adult led and child initiated activities that are inspired by the childrens interests on any paticular day. Practitioners have a deep knowledge of the children and their individual needs ensuring that learning is planned and delivered in ways that enable children to be challenged. As a result the children have a genuine interest in learning and show a desire to be challenged.

The children in the setting are happy, confident and secure with positive attitudes to the nursery. They make significant progress and are respectfulof each other. The nursery has clear rules so that the children understand the behaviour that is expected of them. This alleviates any confusion and encourages good behaviour through positive role modelling.
